What makes African Beekeeping Safaris different from traditional safaris?
Our tours combine world-class wildlife safaris in Southern Africa with hands-on beekeeping experiences. You’ll open African bee hives, learn from local beekeepers, see conservation projects like elephant bee-fences, taste our local honeys and still enjoy classic Big Five game drives and luxury accommodations.
Do I need prior beekeeping experience?
Not at all. Our safaris are designed for beginners and experienced beekeepers and your family. You’ll be guided safely through every hive experience with professional beekeepers and provided with all protective equipment – no need to bring any gear along.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Both packages offer exceptional wildlife opportunities. In the Kruger National Park, expect Big Five sightings (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo). In Victoria Falls, you’ll witness additional species along the Zambezi River and in surrounding reserves.
Is it safe to work with African bees?
Yes. We love our hot bees but we take safety extremely seriously. All hive interactions are supervised by trained beekeepers, proper gear is provided and we only open hives in conditions that are safe and calm for guests and bees.
What type of accommodation is included?
You’ll stay in beautiful, luxury lodges such as Kambaku River Lodge in South Africa on the banks of the Crocodile River and Explorers Village walking distance from the Victoria Falls. Expect comfortable rooms, stunning views, excellent cuisine and relaxing amenities like pools and lounges.
What is the itinerary like?
Both packages begin in Pretoria, South Africa with cultural sightseeing, lions and rhino’s and your first hive experience. Then…
- Package 1 (South Africa) continues into the Kruger region for five days of safari, beekeeping immersion, honey & mead tasting and conservation education.
- Package 2 (South Africa & Zimbabwe) takes you onwards to Victoria Falls for hive visits, elephant–bee coexistence projects, a walk of the falls and spectacular activities like the Zambezi River sunset cruises and other optional adventure excursions.
Can I add additional destinations like Cape Town?
Yes! Both packages offer the option to extend your stay to Cape Town (or elsewhere) where you can enjoy beaches, wine farms, Table Mountain and world-class cuisine.
Are the safaris suitable for children or families?
Families are welcome, though hive activities may have minimum age requirements for safety. Game drives and cultural visits are family-friendly, and we can tailor recommendations based on your group.
What should I pack?
We recommend:
- Comfortable safari clothing in neutral colours
- Closed shoes for hive visits
- A light jacket for early morning game drives
- Swimwear for lodge pools
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
Beekeeping suits and protective gear are provided and we will send you recommendations based on your selected season of travel.
